On Thursday, February 18th, at Carleton University, as part of a round-table discussion, Donna Balkan spoke at the inaugural YCPG Ottawa event about her  move from political science to journalism to public relations and communications as well as her overall career, skill sets and experiences.

Donna Balkan, Communications Manager, Canadian Co-operative Association

Donna Balkan is a former journalist and long-time communications professional. Ms. Balkan has a degree in political science from McGill University, a degree in journalism from Carleton University, and nearly two decades of experience in media and public affairs.

Before her current position at the Canadian Co-operative Association, Ms. Balkan was Chief of Public Affairs for the City of Ottawa and Senior Communications Manager at the Canadian Council for the Arts. Prior to those posts, she worked in the federal public service at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade as their Deputy Director, Communications Programs and Outreach. Before that, Ms. Balkan was Manager, Media and External Relations at the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

Ms. Balkan is a former Ottawa Citizen and CBC Radio journalist, and she was the Executive Director of the Centre for Investigative Journalism, now the Canadian Association of Journalists.
